Absentee Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma

The Absentee-Shawnee Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma, also known as Shaawanwaki, Shaawanooki and Shaawanowi lenaweki or Shawano, were once part of the greater Shawnee Tribe who inhabited areas of Ohio, West Virginia, Western Maryland, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania. The group which became known as the Absentee Shawnee Tribe "absented" themselves from the reservation they were assigned to in Kansas in 1845, and traveled to Texas before they were again relocated by the US Government to Indian Territory in Oklahoma.
