| Sequoyah to Host Open House for Prospective Students |

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — Sequoyah Schools will host their annual Open House event for prospective students on Wednesday, January 28 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Place Where They Play. All area seventh and eighth grade students who are interested in applying to come to Sequoyah as freshman are invited to attend. “We usually have more than 300 students come and see what we have to offer,” said Gina Stanley, Sequoyah Schools’ superintendant. “Many of the area schools that do not have their own high schools will bring their students. We provide lunch and entertainment while they are here. They always have a good time.”Parents are encouraged to attend the event with students who are not attending from a local dependant school district. All participants will receive a campus tour, admission application, lunch and a question and answer session with Sequoyah staff. The deadline to register is January 21. Sequoyah Schools, a boarding school for Native American students, originated in 1871 as an orphan asylum to care for children who were orphaned by the Civil War. Now known as Sequoyah Schools, it is named for Sequoyah, the scholar who developed the Cherokee syllabary. The school is regionally and state accredited for grades 7-12 and has become the school of choice for more than 400 Native American students every year.
