Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma

There are three recognized Kickapoo tribes remaining in the United States: the Kickapoo of Kansas, the Kickapoo of Oklahoma, and the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas. There is another band in the Mexican state of Coahuila. There is also a large group in Arizona.

Kickapoo is an Algonquian language closely related to Mesquakie-Sauk, and is a tonal language. This means the pitch of a vowel can change a Kickapoo word's meaning.

The Kickapoo tribe was originally an offshoot of the Shawnee tribe but their language and customs had more in common with the neighboring Fox and Sauk. The original Kickapoo territory included the lands that are now Michigan, Wisconsin, and Illinois.
